Publ. "Zelta grauds". "Latvieši" is a journalistic work by Garlība Merķelis, written in 1796 in German. In it, the author sharply criticizes serfdom and the attitude of German nobles towards Latvian peasants in Vidzeme. The book initiated discussions about the rights of the Latvian people, societal reforms, and influenced the ideas of the national awakening.
