The central character of the novel "Kalendārs mani sauc" is a young man with a difficult-to-define mental health condition. At times, it seems his mind works like that of a child, at other times – better than most adults. The story's structure is formed by letters written to the local small-town pastor, in which the main character reflects on what is happening in his life, thereby getting to know himself and the world around him. An unhappy love affair has led him to an existential necessity to
memorize the name days celebrated on each calendar date, to "get closer" to the girl he is interested in, namely – among all the names, hers is also found. The book's description notes: “The peculiarities of Oskars or Kalendārs' memory and his supernatural ability to concentrate on specific tasks not only reveal a very unique psychological portrait of the character but also drive forward touching, captivating, and amusing twists of events. However, stronger than all the aforementioned are the emotionally immediate revelations of the character about people and their mutual relationships, which the seemingly distorted consciousness reveals with naive sincerity.”
