The bombardier Joseriana's ingenuity is endless when it comes to devising plans to save his skin from the dreadful prospects offered by war. His efforts are entirely understandable, as thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. Joseriana tries to avoid the perilous missions he is forced to fly, but he is caught in the bureaucratic loop of "Catch-22," from which the book gets its name: a person is considered insane if they voluntarily continue flying dangerous missions; insane
people are discharged; but as soon as he asks to be relieved from such missions, he is considered sane and can continue serving.
Alongside "The Good Soldier Švejk's Adventures in the World War," "Catch-22" is ranked among the greatest satirical works of the 20th century, whose logic in the looking glass will be relevant as long as there are wars. It is an endlessly serious and sad, yet at the same time, damn funny book.
